 Job Hunt

So you know that you want to work in a particular field but you may not have all the necessary skills that you need to land the job. Don’t worry, here are a few pointers on how to get the skills and experience that you need.

An Internship

An internship is a great way to get work experience in the field of your choice. Essentially it is training that you gain while on the job. Internships can be completed during the summer, over a winter break, or even on weekends. If you work, or study, during the week be prepared to give up your weekends to gain the experience that you need. Keep in mind that you may not have much time for yourself short-term but in the long-run having the experience will last a lifetime.

Get a Part-time Job

If you are already working, or if you have a full schedule at college during the week, another great way to gain some experience is to work part-time. This means that perhaps you work in the evenings for a few hours to gain the needed experience, or sometimes you work just 10-15 random hours whenever you are free.

Volunteer Work

Use your free time and volunteer your services in your area of interest in order to gain experience.  Reach out to people and ask to volunteer in their organization. Try start-ups to gain experience. Many start-ups are looking for free, or inexpensive labor, for their operations. It is a win-win situation on both sides. Most employers will respond positively.

Take Courses

Take courses in the area that you would like to break into. If you are looking to become a baker then go to a baking institute of repute and get certification. If you are looking to get into graphic design then take a course in Photoshop, Coral draw, Illustrator etc. The world is your oyster and there are so many programs and courses related to each industry. Find something that will leverage you up.

Online Experience

Depending on the field that you are entering, some experience can be gained online. For example, if you are thinking of doing something in education there are many online sites that look for teachers and tutors. Or if you are thinking of entering into Marketing, you can look for freelance jobs online whereby you can complete assignments from home, such as content writing, social media postings etc.

Talk to people, interact, share your thoughts and ideas as to why you need the experience; you will be surprised how many people will want to hire you just from your enthusiasm and positive energy. Employers, institutions, and organizations all want to hire people who are excited and passionate about what they want to do. Share this and you will get the experience that you are looking for.
