Field of activity

The aim of the programme is to improve the employment and income situation of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) by improving access to finance and business services, strengthening entrepreneurial and managerial skills and addressing key barriers to business and investment climate. The programme focuses on value chain development in dynamic sectors with high growth potential. In the field of agriculture, the sectors of intervention are cassava, potatoes and rice, while the focus in the non-agricultural sector is on low-cost housing.

The specific needs of women are taken into account in all fields of action. The regional focus is on the three federal states Ogun, Niger and Plateau, with measures being implemented at federal, state and local level. The head office is in Abuja.

Your tasks

  • Responsible for the intervention area „access to financial services“ with a thematic focus on i) advising financial institutions in order to improve access to financial services ii) institutionalisation of financial literacy training iii) supporting the development of business models for MSMEs and start-ups of selected sectors
  • Strategic orientation, steering, coordination and financial management of the intervention area
  • Direction and coordination of the thematic contributions within the intervention area
  • Project management of special initiatives and ensuring synergies with co-sponsors
  • Supervisory responsibility for international and national long term experts
  • Advice of local partners, e.g. microfinance banks, training institutions, NGOs and the Central Bank
  • Representation of the programme towards the contracting authority and regular reporting

Your profile

You have a university degree in the field of economics, business administration or social sciences and several years of work experience abroad.

Furthermore, you offer the following competences:

  • At least 5 years professional experience in project management and consulting in the field ‘access to financial services’; profound knowledge in financial systems development
  • Proficiency in the area of ‘value chain development (VCD)’ (agricultural and non-agricultural VCD); experience in collaborating with the private sector is an asset
  • Experience in leading heterogeneous teams (national and international experts, decentralised personnel) is desirable
  • Excellent coordination and cooperation skills in the international context
  • Pronounced competences in communication and political dialogue; experience in networking and donor coordination
  • Sound knowledge of GIZ procedures and standards
  • Profound analytical skills and structured reasoning; interest to immerse into new thematic fields
  • High resilience and frustration tolerance
  • Team oriented and motivated mindset
  • Willingness to travel to Plateau, Niger and Ogun states
  • Excellent written and oral English language skills; good German language skills are an advantage

Assignment period

01.09.2017 – 31.03.2019; with the option of extension until 31.03.2020.

Conditions regarding location

Abuja is characterised by a warm and humid rainy season, which lasts from April to October. The peak of the rainy season is in July and August with heavy daily rainfall. In this period the maximum temperature reaches 30°C. Rainfall is rare during dry season with temperatures reaching 35°C in February and March. Occasionally, temperatures exceed 40°C. The temperatures during the night are never below 20°C throughout the year.

Reliable primary health care services of international standard are available in Abuja; by several internationally trained doctors and medical facilities (international hospital).

A german kindergarten and a German elementary school as well as international elementary and secondary schools (French school, American school and various schools according to the british curriculum) are available.
